Voice instructions

Blue Light Maps uses your device’s built-in Text-to-Speech (TTS) engine for turn-by-turn instructions. We don’t ship our own voice, so the quality and selection depend on the TTS engine installed on your phone.

Work through these in order:

  1. Check media volume. Use the physical volume buttons on the side of the device. Voice plays on the media channel, not the ringer.
  2. Check “Change with buttons”. On iOS, Settings → Sounds & Haptics → “Change with Buttons” must be on (or use the volume slider directly).
  3. Check Bluetooth. If the phone is connected to a car stereo or headset, the voice goes there. Check the car audio source and volume.
  4. Android only: Open the app’s settings and confirm voice instructions are enabled, then verify the system TTS settings (next section).

Android lets you swap TTS engines, voices, pitch, and speed. The exact menu varies by manufacturer and Android version. We recommend the Google TTS engine; it sounds more natural than most manufacturer defaults.

Samsung

Settings → General management → Text-to-speech output. Tap the cog next to Preferred engine to install voice data, languages, and styles. Switching the engine from Samsung to Google usually gives a more natural voice.

Google Pixel

Settings → System → Language & input → Text-to-speech. Tap the cog next to Preferred engine to choose a different voice.

iOS uses the system voice. Change it in Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices. Newer iPhones include the “Enhanced” voices, which are noticeably better than the defaults.
